How orthopedic rehabilitation works at Norfolk PT
Recovering from orthopedic surgery or a significant injury is a process with stages, and each stage needs the right dose of work. Early on, we protect what your surgeon repaired while managing swelling and pain and getting motion back. As healing allows, we rebuild strength, balance, and endurance, then work toward the specific things you want to do again — stairs, getting in and out of the tractor, playing with grandkids, or getting back on the golf course.
We follow your surgeon's protocol closely and keep them updated with evaluation and progress notes, so everyone on your care team is on the same page. Because you see your therapist one-on-one, your program adjusts visit to visit based on how you're actually responding — not a generic handout.
What to expect
- A plan built around your surgeon's protocol and your goals
- Swelling, pain, and range-of-motion management early on
- Progressive strengthening and balance work as you heal
- A home exercise program that grows with you
- Progress reports sent to your physician
Orthopedic Rehabilitation: common questions
When should I start physical therapy after surgery?
Often within days of surgery, but your surgeon decides. Many joint replacement and ligament patients start within the first week. Call us before your surgery and we'll get your first appointments scheduled so there's no gap in care.
How long does rehab after a knee or hip replacement take?
Most people attend therapy for roughly 6 to 12 weeks after a joint replacement, with continued improvement for months afterward. Your plan depends on your health, your goals, and how you progress.
Can I do therapy close to home instead of in a bigger city?
Yes. Many patients have surgery in Omaha, Lincoln, or Sioux City and do their rehab with us in Norfolk, Tilden, or Newman Grove. We follow your surgeon's protocol and keep them updated.
“Treat all patients as individuals and formulate treatment plans to reach your goals.”
